"Pacing is a skill. Some people just don't have that internal clock. I've been running for 14 years, and through practice it's second nature to me. You're doing constant repeats. You've just got to feel it." - Adam Perkins, pacer for Bernard Lagat when he set the U.S. indoor 5000-meter record of 13:11:50 in February
Pacing is a skill I don't have it down yet but when I run with other people I'm a pretty good runner :-) Today I was supposed to do 5 miles. A warm up, cool down and 3 ten min. miles. Now, I can't do that so for the 3 miles I just ran as fast as I could. However, it was like run jog run jog run jog and I didn't feel it was accomplishing anything. So, I saw a girl who I've seen out there before but never talked to her and as she was finishing tying her shoe I asked if I could run with her. She was happy to do so, she runs faster than me and I told her at any point please feel free to run on with out me but I ended up staying with her. That made me feel so good :-) I got to do 3 miles fast (well, fast for me) and so I'm happy with today's training :-) But I have noticed that pacing really, truly helps me.

Out of town....all day....at UGA with Kailah attending seminars and driving. So, I took a second rest day, besides there's no way I could run 400 miles that's how far it was to get there and back!! 13.1 about kicked my butt....oh wait a minute, IT DID there's no "about" about it!!!

"I run because it's my passion, and not just a sport. Every time I walk out the door, I know why I'm going where I'm going and I'm already focused on that special place where I find my peace and solitude. Running, to me, is more than just a physical exercise...it's a consistent reward for victory!" - Sasha Azevedo, Model and runner

"Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, you can achieve." - Mary Kay Ash, Founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc.
I just needed to know what 13.1 miles felt like. For some reason I needed to know if it was in me somewhere? I've put myself on a program to work up to it but I wasn't satisfied till I knew that I could do it or not. Well, I DID!!! YEAH!!! I didn't walk either! It took me 2:58:08 to finish! I am very proud of that because I know I tried the very hardest ever! I can honestly look back and know I could have not gone any faster, I did my very very best!!
If you do everything perfectly and were going to get a graded on eating, resting etc. all the stuff you read about, I would get a big fat "F" What was different that I never did before was on mile number four and eight I ate a gel pack. I didn't feel any shock of energy or anything but I finished those miles and I know they had something to do with that :-)
I didn't run on an easy course. It had rained all day the day before so I ran on muddy grass, gravel, sand and slipped up here and there. Then I ran up into the High School where I knew three miles were marked but getting there I ran a slow gradual hill, going down hill was a wonderful though. And on mile number five and ten I had to visit the porta potty (of course) I have got to find a way to not do that.
Outside that I just kept going and going but at mile number nine it got really hard. Like mentally I had to focus not walking. Lord have mercy....I kept saying to myself, "You're almost done" over and over. Pretty much all the way to the last 100 yards. It was tough. I thought oh, I'll pray for people! I couldn't, I just had to keep putting one foot in front of the other, like keep moving forward. I couldn't think about anything other than that. I'm telling you it was hard. I was soooo glad to finish that last mile!
This is really bad! I had to hurry up and get in the car to pick up Kailah and drive her to the horse stables for her to volunteer and didn't stretch or cool down really. HOLY CRAP!! My legs about two minutes into driving started cramping really really bad!! The girls met me with yogurt, wheat turkey sandwich, I had another gel pack and ibuprofen. They drove me there and back because they only have their permits and I was stretching in the seat. This all helped alot. You would not believe how much that hurt. I was really amazed about it. When I walked and bent over my knee's and bones popped ~ told ya I'd get a big fat "F"!
I'm fine now, I took a shower cuz I had mud all over me. Relaxed on the couch a bit. I'm really tight. I know tomorrow I will rest for sure!!
I'm gonna try to take picture of the fall leaves falling all around the trail when you run. It was so beautiful. I was in such a kind environment. All the older guys who walk everyday would ask as I passed them, "How many today?" I'd say 13 and they would cheer! When I passed them they yelled out encouraging words! One guy gave me a high five as I passed then later ran with me! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH THAT HELPED!! I love them!! I'm gonna make them a gift of something like cookies! Some people are just fine without that.....me....its a pep in my step, wind at my back and a smile in my heart :-)
For my first 13.1 miles, it was a wonderful experience but I'm glad I don't have to do it for another 9 weeks! One thing I realize when I train I need to get used to doing long miles on Sundays starting at 8am. Thats when my race is. So, I need to take care of business before that and prep the day before. So my body understands this is what you will do till the day you die!! haha j/j :-)

"The most important day in any running program is rest. Rest days give your muscles time to recover so you can run again. Your muscles build in strength as you rest." - Hal Higdon
I think I'm just going to have to write that quote on my mirror in lipstick or something? Rest days are hard for me. Its hard because its not always about my personal record and I think I have made that very clear ;-)
But I set a goal. I set it for a few different reasons and I've been real wishy washy about it but today I committed! I bought my ticket to the 1/2 Marathon in Oak Ridge Tennessee!!! So, I have been looking at training schedules for running that and there are like 3 days in one week of rest/xtraining on purpose. I think I go through that a little bit anyways but most the time its not by choice. However, I can see why you have to do that. And so until Nov. 21st 2010 I'm changing my mindset a little bit so I can focus on doing well for the race. I'm going out there with the intent of doing what the schedule says. I do have to tweak it a little cuz my race happens to be on a Sunday. They have it where I'm like running 10 and 8 minute miles for 3-5 miles at a time and um....I can't do that....yet! Anyways, I'm using Runners World Magazine's 1/2 Marathon Schedule, "Two Hours or Bust" not because I plan to do it in two hours but because it looks like a good foundation for me to work off of.
http://www.secretcityhalfmarathon.com/
So, today I rested, but part of that was because I didn't know what exactly to do as far as Mon- Sun. and I got distracted because Jeremy and I didn't get to go swim when we wanted to AND I'm still irritated that I didn't get to do 13.1 miles on Friday so I figured know what? I'll rest today, do that tomorrow and I'll write in concrete after tomorrow what I have planned for the next 9 weeks!! Jesus is King!

“Keep away from those who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you believe that you too can become great.” - Mark Twain quotes
Lord Have Mercy! What a day it has been, not at all what I expected but fortunately because of Janet my running friend it turned out pretty good. Then I found out later through Facebook that God laid me on someone elses heart and they prayed for me that morning. Good friends...pull you through.
Today I have everything to a "T" planned out. I was going to do 13.1 miles even if I had to walk I just needed to feel it, right? Wrong!
When I made the decision to do this I didn't take into account that there was a festival that weekend and they may have it closed for setting up. When I heard it was a possibility I thought that stinks cuz I already missed my run to rest. Well, whatever, I'll just run around or behind what they are doing and run through a different area (make it work). Um, there were cops guarding the street that leads to the park. It wasn't even the park. I couldn't use that part. I told the cop, "Um, I came to do thirteen miles ( I guess I thought he'd say ok drive through?)" He said, "Well, you can run around Heritage Park thirteen times." Heritage Park is cement. So, I went to Heritage and one of the Boling walkers said, "You run. You shouldn't run. My feet are hurting it won't be good for you." So, I went home. I thought well, I guess I'll just run my neighborhood for 3 hours since thats what I'm guesstimating then... it is what it is. But I was so depressed and went to bed. I had a few other hang ups before all that like waking up at 2am cuz I was anxious and Jeremy taking the car that had all my supplies for the run that day (I was coming prepared!) Oh well.
Thankfully, Janet who runs at Boling too couldn't run either so she contacted through Facebook Kailah and we all met there. Ya know...Facebook can be a good thing. Anyways, I would have not gone there if they hadn't said they were. I'm so nervous about injury, I'll steer clear from it! But she pointed out I don't run on it enough that it will do that but I'd feel it in new places. So I ran 8 miles there :-) Yeah! I know I said I'd do 13.1 regardless but it was in the heat of the day and that would not be wise. But I started at 11:09 and eight miles later it was 12:43 at mile seven I walked/ran but the last half mile to number 8 I ran...so....if I took an assessment of just that, I would not want to run but something inside still keeps saying, "You are better than what you think you are." Leaving me with this feeling of I can do this. So, I will try again...and again...and again...till I can do it right!! So, all the "right" eating didn't go with this timing and the "right" sleeping was a big fail too. So, with the time of the day I ran which wasn't "right" when it was all said and done I did good but it wouldn't have happened if it weren't for them. Kailah and Meghan were so helpful too. They were there too.
This was a great learning experience too, very enlightning...I could never figure out how come I had scratches on me on my stomach? Well, while I was running it felt like my shirt was sand paper....didn't think twice till after I got out of the shower and saw my stomach all scratched up!! Its the running!! I've thought, am I scratching myself while I sleep? Cuz it does leave scabs hahaha I'm such a dork! Dan (my running Father in Law) said, "Guys have to put on a deorderant type stuff cuz of that" but I'm not a guy so I didn't think it would apply to me. I do know, from learning the hard way to use that on your inner theighs. Well, I guess I should put it all over the trunk of my body...goodness...I'm just glad I know what is happening!! I thought hmm? Did my belt scratch me? Well, its only taken nine months but hey!! I get it now!!
